A message from Sylvia

As we continue on the paths that our work as artists keep us on - Chris finishing his novel and producing music, sylvia devoting her studio time to solo projects that increasingly get attention from curators, Sapna shooting her co-starring role on NBC's 'Awake' - among other things, Keskarel seems to have ended, as successful collaborative projects are supposed to. We hope our project continued just long enough, and is not ending too soon or too late. Look for us, each of us - sylviatoyindustries, Chris Arthur-Henly Robinson, Michael Lewis, Diana Slampyak, Nidal Yousef, Nima Nejad, Steven Lewis & Sapna Gandhi - in the future. We will be there making art.

it looks great, since i have  had to go back to the source files - yay! no more aspect ratio chazzerai ...

Steve & Sapna: although i still want to make a webisode with what we shot, i've used clips from "all three days" and you have a lot more screen time. the loud scene that's heard by all the neighbors turned out to be from the second day - Steve's reading of the 'get thee to a nunnery' speech. it's done split screen, ie, Keskarel, Hamlet + Ophelia, and the Videographer synced. it's really, really, really cool and it's killing me not to post it now.

Nidal & Diana: the scene where Diana gives back her keys is probably out because K is NOT happy about going back. if there's time (i.e. i get the edit done enough, we should reshoot it in more continuity with K's conflict and ambivalence.

you guys (Chris included) are so fantastic.

Keskarel - The Penultimate Scene

Keskarel A Quicktime Storyboard has wrapped. Thanks to all the people who watched this happen - it helped a lot! We will be in post-production for the next few weeks, and will have our first screening in September. in San Francisco The final version of the movie will here on Vimeo, free and downloadable until sylvia stops paying the bill, which she can do for quite a while, since this movie cost less than one thousand USD! Long live video!

Later today, sylvia will post the remaining rushes from this past week. In the next few days, the final cut (save the very last scene) will be posted. And the complete movie will be available for downloading after the screening in September.

There's a good chance that this October the San Francisco Board of Supervisors will lower the daily permit fee from $300 per day to $100 per day for budget sub-1/2 million productions. But we are hoping that we can avoid some of the permit expense by getting the permission of other merchants in the Hayes Valley neighborhood where we're located, in order to shoot scenes that we left out of the storyboard, mostly for the sake of storytelling economy. We have kept this "movie" lean, and hopefully, crisp - nobody wants to hear "trim the fat." But cinematographer Mike Lewis, who's directed or co-directed a few scenes, has some great ideas for further developing Keskarel's inner conflict by exploiting sensory details that are already in our scenes.

Techside: sylvia found a boom stand 85 or 90% off for $20 (knock wood!) and a starter lens kit (a decent wide-angle lens and an adequate telephoto lens) for the Vixia HG 20 (knock even harder: $35, down from $140!). She finally bought replacement bulbs for the worklights she's used to make some of her crazy performance art videos, and has two nice 500 Watt studio light sets. We need a better mic to use with the new boom stand, but sylvia is looking for the best one she can find at a bargain. Besides, we don't have any reflectors - we've got to get those first. And fortunately, she's already got four nice Shure XLR lavaliere mics and a Juiced Link XLR adapter.

Thanks for reading - and watching!

Keskarel - update this week: We are done!

congratulations to the Keskarel for wrapping the shooting of our Quicktime storyboard. our AD, Chris Arthur-Henly Robinson, is out of town, writing the screenplay 'Keskarel' from his outlines and the storyboard. we made this video greeting card for him. the final version of 'Keskarel A Quicktime Storyboard' will be posted on Vimeo in September 2011 after its screening in San Francisco. in this video: Michael Lewis (cinematographer), Nima Nejad ('Mikael'), Diana Slampyak ('Keskarel') and sylviatoyindustries (a woman of many hats). also absent is Nidal T. Musallam ('The Landlord'), who had a previous engagement (i.e., closing Nabila's and going home for a well-deserved rest).

thanks, everyone!

the good news is that Chris, who has only one more semester of school (YAY) is beginning to write the screenplay based on all the crew's wonderful work.

the bad news is that Chris's mom had a very bad fall off a ladder. fortunately for her, Chris is a good caregiver who is off for the new few weeks.

unfortunately for us, he likely will not be here on the next couple of Thursdays so that he can shoot the last footage that we need and share a big whoop with us when we wrap. luckily, we have our good friend and guest shooter, Mike (YAY).

i want to do the final edit or the bulk of it while i'm on vacation at the beginning of sept, and hope everyone is available this Thursday night, which Nidal says will work for him. i'd like to do this Thurs rather than the 25th in case i need Diana again (well, i always need Diana, but i mean for shooting).

YAY! we are so awesome.

Keskarel this week: sylvia's Assignment

While I wait for the updated-with-new-scenes, now-33:20 minute Quicktime storyboard to complete compression for Vimeo upload, it seems like a good time to relate the latest "layer" of reality in the Keskarel A Movie universe.

Still from 'Kesarel'

I think we've already established that The Videographer doesn't have the view of the building across the way that Keskarel has from her solitary window. Given The Videographer's obsession with seeing (i.e., her own eyes are not enough, so she carries a camera everywhere she goes), I think the best exploitation of the conflict we're (hopefully) showing in the storyboard so far, would be to change the situational fact that The Videographer doesn't know about the domestic violence that her neighbor is watching unfold. How best to exploit The Videographer's part in the core conflict than to show her able to hear but not see the neighbors' sturm und drang, and put it on the other wall from her apartment, which Keskarel would be able to see in the existing Keskarel universe.

Speaking as a person who never goes out the door without a camera, let me tell you that it really does make you crazy sometimes when you know something interesting is happening because you can hear but not see it.

So, my assignment this week is to engineer sounds of the neighbors fighting. Watch for an update later this week.

Keskarel: A new scene, a new cast member

waiting for confirmation from our (we hope!) new cast member:
"hey, Nima! Diana said you might be interested in playing her character's husband for our storyboard? the scene we have written so far is an interior scene in the kitchen. the husband complains about the dinner - a roast chicken - and the wife winds hitting the husband with the bird and knocks him down. he's only dazed. but she runs away because she thinks she's killed him. it will probably take about 4-5 hours to shoot, about 6 or 8 setups. can you let me know if you'd like to do this?"
fingers crossed ...

Keskarel, a Quicktime storyboard: First "On Location" Shoot

Keskarel will be shooting a scene at sylvia's favorite neighborhood grocery store next Thursday (April 28, 2011) - Nabila's Natural Inc., 559 Hayes Street, San Francisco, CA 94102-4213 (415) 864-6514. sylvia loves Nabila not just for the good, mostly gourmet, food and wine, but also for the friendly folks of the family that owns Nabila. When you go to Nabila's, look out for Pepper, who, although she never will replace the big cat of the neighborhood, Manx, who ruled the roost and the pigeons for so many umpteen years, Pepper, well, she's quite the lady and she will love it if you stop and say hi, and scratch her forehead.

The scene, which we'll shoot after the store closes at nine, involves a shoplifter and our Videographer, who as usual is self-absorbed and oblivious to her surroundings, as well as the gregarious, extraverted shopkeeper and Keskarel (Diana Slampyak), who is coincidentally shopping to make a stew.

Also, be on the lookout for new Keskarel writings for Chris, who has a first draft "in the drawer" for aging and fermentation for the last few weeks, and we will soon be posting the finished product.

I am confused. I looked at some of the places on the list and wondered, does this mean that all these places are open to shoot in?
Also whats next with the story? Can we meet this week I have Thursday and Friday off.

Sylvia the blog looks wonderful. I watched myself in our story board conference. no one should subject themselves, to watching themselves, although I didn't mind as much as I thought I would.

Keskarel this week: A message from Chris Arthur-Henly Robinson: Act 2, Scene 3 rewrite

from Christopher Robinson
to sylviatoyindustries
date Thu, Mar 31, 2011 at 5:14 PM
subject Re: Beat 3 Actor's Script with shot setups numbered

Hello Sylvia, I think this is a pretty good representation of what we
discussed yesterday-

Beat Two Continued…

(On the subject of why K left home and went to live on the other side of town.)

K is fixing dinner for her husband; he is sitting at their table
reading a Russian newspaper.
a. Wide shot of K as we hear a bell sound, she walks to the oven and
takes out a chicken. (It is a whole chicken like the kind they sell in
China town.) We follow her (Medium shot with the hand held as she sets
the chicken on the table and smiles.
b. Close up of the chicken as it rest on the table.
c. Medium shot of K’s husband as he say’s, “Is this it? All you made
was a chicken?”
d. Medium shot of K as she says, “I am sorry I didn’t know that you
wanted any sides.”
e. Medium shot of K’s husband as picks at his chicken and say’s, “Its okay.”
f. Fade into an extreme close up of his mouth as he picks the chicken
with his hands, cut in to him putting the chicken in his mouth. Fade
out to a close up as we watch him chew, he eventually lets it dribble
out from his mouth in a lame attempt at spitting it out.
g. Wide shot of the two of them as they watch the food fall to the
table and they stare at it. The camera goes to a medium shot of K who
asks, “What’s wrong with it?”
h. Wide medium shot of husband as he says, “Nothing.”
i. Medium close up shot of K as she lays her head down and mumbles,
“Nothing you just spit it out.”
j. Medium shot of K’s husband as he laughs. “It’s just a little dry.
(We hear sobbing from the other side of the table, but keep the camera
on K’s husband, who says, “Its okay you’ll get better.”
k. Wide shot of the two as K looks up and say’s. “My mother never
taught me to cook like the other mothers did.”
j. Medium shot of K’s husband as he says, “its okay.”
k. Wide medium shot of K, as she covers her face and mumbles, “When
you talk to me like this it makes my whole world go black.”
l. Wide shot of the two as her husband smiles, “I said that it is okay
I know you will get better.”
m. Close up of K’s face as she grows more discontent, it scrunching up
until she fumes. We can hear her husband trying to comfort her in the
background, he says, “Everything will be fine you are my wife and I
married a beautiful woman that gets better with everything she tries
and I know that you’ll get…”
n. Wide shot of K as she knocks glass’s and a candle enroot to the
chicken, she picks up what remains of it. (Fade out into a very wide
shot) as she runs over to her husband, as she raises the bird up he
asks, “What do you think you are doing?”
o. Close up of K’s face as she raises the chicken up in the air, cut
in to the chicken in her hand, then back to her face as it swings
down.
p. Wide shot of the two as her husband gets hit.
q. Over the shoulder shot as her husband gets hit again.
r. Wide shot as he eventually falls to the floor, K stands over him
and hits him with the chicken until he passes out.
s. She bends down and pokes at him, when he doesn’t move she begins to
scream, “What is wrong with me? I have never hurt anything in my life,
why did I hit you my love? What is wrong with me?”
t. Extreme close up of her face as she looks up at the ceiling.
u. Fade out to medium shot as we follow her with a hand held camera
and watch as she grabs for some of her things and rushes out the door.

End beat two.
