A message from Directors Mike Lewis and Chris Robinson

The KeskarelAMovie project has evolved. The frozen chicken, sadly, has gone the way of the Dodo. The evolutionary process that began the first time one of the characters changed the storyline in the middle of an improv session, continued when the Storyboard was complete and AD Chris began writing the script, with Mike as dramaturge, and sylvia, as she promised Mike + Chris, hands-off in her new role as only-the-producer. Mike  summarizes status:
The two of us, Mike and Chris, have decided to reduce the scope of the project to a short film derived from one piece of the Keskarel screen play.  Our plan is to focus on the Therapist and two of his clients/patients as they attempt to work through a marital dispute (Note: This scene has not been published in the blog in order to preserve Chris' copyright. As scriptwriter, Chris opted to replace Hamlet + Ophelia as the noisy neighbors.).  The climax of their therapy is interrupted by the intervention of their disgruntled neighbors, Keskarel and the videographer.  This preserves much of our original planned ending for the feature length film, and does not exclude the possibility of eventually filming more from the feature length storyboard of Keskarel.  However Mike and Chris are not interested in working on that story at this time.

This change in plans was agreed upon by Mike and Chris for several reasons.  One reason being the amount of work and finances needed to produce a feature length story.  On top of these practical hurdles, Mike and Chris are still not happy with the current version of the Keskarel screen play.  It is really more of a character study than a story with a plot.  And without an interesting plot, we feel there is not a compelling drama.

Mike and Chris both believe that the story arc for the Keskarel character could be developed.  And we have specific ideas how to do this.  However, neither Mike nor Chris are very interested in working on that kind of story.  We prefer to work on the part of the story that we find the most interesting, which is the Therapist sub-plot.

One strategy we are currently discussing is to build up the "Keskarel" project as a group of short stories which are interwoven or loosely connected.  Each short story can be approached as it's own short film project.  These shorts can either be edited together into a feature length film or presented separately as stand-alone short films.

In addition to the Therapist story, we want to film another short segment involving a character from a short story by Chris.  This segment is surrealistic and may or may not connect well to the other story by the time we complete it.  However, the point of this is to make short films that are complete and finished rather than to continue making storyboards.
sylvia is busy with solo projects and likely will only be producer and crew on the Keskarel Project in its new incarnation, but, we hope the rest of our cast - Diana, Nidal, Nima, Sapna & Steve - will like the new scripts for shorts.

A message from sylviatoyindustries: Keskarel Evolves

apologies for our recent spotty updating. while i have been trying not be a micro-managing producer and as well, distracted by my solo projects, Mike Lewis & Chris Robinson, in their planning and critique of Chris's script, have taken the project to new levels.

Mike and Chris will compose their own summaries for posting here, but, briefly, they have stripped the story of its core and are building one of the subplots - the noisy neighbors - as the heart of the story. There are new characters, new conflicts and the other night, i heard something about animation.

we also have a new intern, Nick, whose wonderful stories have a lot of potential for visual storytelling. i hope to put Nick behind a camera on one of my solo projects to get him started, so when Mike and Chris are ready to shoot, Nick will be more up to speed.

as always, thanks for reading.

hey.  as the last shoot Sapna & I did was a nightmare trying to do so many different scenes in my living room, light changes, special effects and all, i am going to try to find a space (read empty room with plain, neutral walls) that i can rent cheaply from time to time. i know from theatre and voice study that such rooms exist. it is likely that if rented for a block of time, a person could bring in necessary furniture, etc. just for the rental time, just like you can do for theatre.

Okay, so far I have two ideas for a movie, the first is extending the piece I wrote about our therapist, the second is about an ape that is born with human hands. He becomes a doctor (The incredible Doctor Guthrie) His wife dies, after a controversial marriage, that inspires some politicians to say, "see look what happens when you let the gays get married." He also meets a man or woman that is dying of cancer to make money in order to pay for their kemo treatments they somehow hatch up the idea to sell him to the zoo. Since our incredible doctor is addicted to drugs and suicidal he ends up getting tricked into going cross country with this person. When they get to the zoo our kemo character cannot go through with it, consequently signing their own death warrant. I am working on a third that can connect with these two. I am thinking maybe it could be a series of shorts where all the characters are at the same bar confessing something about their lives.

Also, I got an intern to help with the movie - he really wants to help with a possible new project. I had him send me a couple of his stories and he is in an improvising troupe, I forget what they are called, but he is very motivated and reliable and I want to send them to you. I hope you are doing well Sylvia. I have the day off tomorrow and I would love to meet up and discuss all these things with you.

hey. let's talk today. i have holiday today. let's first work on your resume, okay?  i am starting a new performance art project that i have to do starting about one in order to have the best shooting light. we can meet before or after.

also, mike seems to think if you develop the therapist story to be big enough to be pivotal, the rest of keskarel may be doable around it. not sure what he means ...

A message from sylviatoyindustries: happy 2012

Happy New Year. I hope that you have good things to look forward to in 2012. We sure do - especially now that co-directors Michael Lewis and Chris Arthur-Henly Robinson have begun their collaboration to realize Keskarel. They are energetic and excited about working on the movie, and highly motivated - Chris wants to shoot a scene as soon as possible and Mike is dedicating a lot of creative thought to making a real person out of Keskarel, by developing the story of her relationship with her husband, Mikhail, giving her goals and put simply, a little backbone.

When Mike and I met, I jokingly asked him how many flashbacks Chris wanted. Without blinking, he said "two."  I was taught and have difficulty letting go of the philosophy that flashbacks are inherently something to be avoided. But Mike had the same dramatic writing teacher that I had, and handles flashbacks like a virtuoso. I do agree with the boys that Keskarel and Mikhail’s relationship needs to play more deeply and real, since what went wrong between them not only led to the inciting incident, but also is a major clue to their respective characters and motivations.

Ironed out: Mikhail is an ambitious young lawyer pursuing the "American Dream." Keskarel was not mature enough when she got married. They are not newlyweds. She is flaky, creative, spatial and way too artsy fartsy not to frequently collide head-on with her upwardly mobile husband's plans. Mike and Chris are still developing what leads up to the inciting incident - namely the beaning of Mikhail with the frozen chicken.

After Mike and Chris meet again later this week I will have a better idea of what and when our first shoot will be.

A message from sylvia toy: Happy Holidays

Thanks for following our blog, which is almost one year old!

We were supposed to be just having fun yesterday at Christmas dinner, but Mike, Chris, Miranda and i had a brief meeting over the cassoulet, and agreed:
  • Mike and Chris's first directoral story conference will happen at the end of the week and an update will be posted;
  • Miranda will start the costuming process on http://www.polyvore.com/ - which looks like a cool way to work;
  • We have a scene designer 90% confirmed.

hey. imagine you are finishing the semester. winter blues are worse than usual at our place because of my mom's death. i have the flu and will probably have to lay a little low while my lungs fix themselves over the next few weeks. but i think we should pick one scene with Diana, design and set it up and shoot it.

we need to get our feet wet. how about the week after Christmas?

hey. i think my doing the initial dramaturgy, i.e. is the script true to the throughline etc., is okay. but, for instance, i think the end is weak and needs further thought. i don't think i should be involved in that. i have my own opinion, but other than the initial cuts, that's the most major input i should have on the script at this point. and Chris, you should run any of those cuts you disagree with by Mike, who is a really good dramaturg.

i apologize for my absence - i have been holding vigil for my beautiful mother, Lela Shanks, who died yesterday morning. i am grateful to Mama for so many things - not least of which is encouraging me as an artist.

a lot is going on - Chris is almost done with the script, we are recruiting PA's, the actors are stoked and we will be shooting the real deal movie soon.

yay!

please watch this today or tomorrow and let me know if you want your name presented differently. this is only watchable by us. there's a special effect for the dryer scene and the ending left to edit. i want to be able to give this to the pro encoders by Friday or Saturday.

Fooldron has made a comment on Keskarel, a Quicktime storyboard - Titles, 2d Pass:
Still way too slow. If you are married to the typing out of the words, then they should type in at about 80 words per minute or faster. Otherwise I get REALLY impatient. Impatient enough that it makes me want to stop watching it.

Are you trying to cater to the length of the music? What about typing it out faster while it scrolls up? That way I can read without having to wait for the words to finish appearing.

hmmm. then we will be sure to have a wash/dry sequence in Indigo Lady, or 3: one for blood after the pig scene, one after the rape scene, one after Donald tracks in mud.

i hope everything is coming along.

The Final Cut

it looks great, since i have  had to go back to the source files - yay! no more aspect ratio chazzerai ...

Steve & Sapna: although i still want to make a webisode with what we shot, i've used clips from "all three days" and you have a lot more screen time. the loud scene that's heard by all the neighbors turned out to be from the second day - Steve's reading of the 'get thee to a nunnery' speech. it's done split screen, ie, Keskarel, Hamlet + Ophelia, and the Videographer synced. it's really, really, really cool and it's killing me not to post it now.

Nidal & Diana: the scene where Diana gives back her keys is probably out because K is NOT happy about going back. if there's time (i.e. i get the edit done enough, we should reshoot it in more continuity with K's conflict and ambivalence.

you guys (Chris included) are so fantastic.

the good news is that Chris, who has only one more semester of school (YAY) is beginning to write the screenplay based on all the crew's wonderful work.

the bad news is that Chris's mom had a very bad fall off a ladder. fortunately for her, Chris is a good caregiver who is off for the new few weeks.

unfortunately for us, he likely will not be here on the next couple of Thursdays so that he can shoot the last footage that we need and share a big whoop with us when we wrap. luckily, we have our good friend and guest shooter, Mike (YAY).

i want to do the final edit or the bulk of it while i'm on vacation at the beginning of sept, and hope everyone is available this Thursday night, which Nidal says will work for him. i'd like to do this Thurs rather than the 25th in case i need Diana again (well, i always need Diana, but i mean for shooting).

YAY! we are so awesome.

A message from sylviatoyindustries

putting my photo in this post because it gets really personal for me this weekend, when i shoot the Hamlet + Ophelia scene with my youngest "sibling," brother-in-law Steven Lewis (whose first love is theatre!) and my dearest, darling Sapna (Sapna Gandhi), who gets shockingly more beautiful every year! it is so flattering that two people (who have LA agents getting them auditions and work on a regular basis) think it will be fun to work on my 'little movie.' wow!

A message from sylviatoyindustries

progress on the final cut
i worked on the sound last evening and it is much improved. tonight i will be doing a little resequencing, having: 1) watched the Storyboard twice in the last 24 hours; and 2) had a 20 minute story conference with AD Chris; 3) the placement of some events is just wrong and doesn't make sense in the world of the Story

planning pickup
in chronological order (we will add to this list):
1) return to the laundromat with Diana and show Keskarel with the money belt, having had her freakout, start thinking about her next move, which in the real world would involve money. we still like the idea that her grandma insisted on giving her a stash of cash "just in case," and think it likely that Mikael, in the last scene or so, will ask her what she's been living on.
2) show 2 scenelets or so leading up to the Videographer putting a "don't even think of knocking" sign on her door.
3) reshoot the Videographer hearing the neighbors' "fight" without!!! sculpture in the frame.

A message from sylviatoyindustries

Last night, the Keskarel company was smokin' - mostly Nima, who was on-camera by himself most of the time. We found out that he's ticklish, can always find his mark and his voice can go down quite low when he growls "Kesky." We also found out that Nidal is the personification of pokerface. That's all i'll say for now. rushes by midnight.

A message from sylviatoyindustries to the Keskarel Cast

Tomorrow night

To: diana slampyak, Nima Nejad
Cc: Christopher Robinson
hey, Diana said she accidentally deleted this, so i'm resending.

i spent 7 or 8 hours yesterday cleaning up and resequencing the storyboard. after seeing the flow, i think we will hold off on the second laundromat scene (below). even with trimming, the movie is 63 minutes. a first film like this will just not be crisp if there is anything redundant. crispness helps balance unknownness.

you all should know that the old kitchen scene has been chopped up and woven into the laundromat scene as flashbacks. i think once i clean up the transitions the pace of the scene will be at a nice clip. however what that means is that scene is still happening after what we shoot tomorrow night, and we will have to have some scenework to show the couple temporarily making up before the big gundown. the storyboard is rendering, now and it will take all day. but once it's up tonight, it would be a good idea for you all to watch the beginning of the movie. i will send the link tonight, or you can watch it on the blog or Facebook.

also, Mike and i will reshoot the Videographer with her headphones on with no sculpture in the picture. that is a continuity fix that's simple.

Subject: Here are three more scenes
To: keskarel navapeac <keskarel@gmail.com>

Hi Sylvia, I had a lot of dreams last night, woke up at six thirty had
brunch with my wife and got to work. So this would be a combination of
the many things we have discussed for our project. I hope you enjoy
the beats.
I figure we need two more scenes after these three. For the next scene
I would like a beat where V convinces K to go back to her husband, K
says something like, “I want to go to the beach first, it is the place
where I think best, the place that gives me strength.” V agrees then
the two get lost and do not end up making it back to Nima’s.
In the final scene V can say something about a surprise she has for K,
K say’s, “I love surprises,” and the two can take the bus back towards
Nima’s. Along the way V convinces K to go back home. I would like to
improvise the meeting between Nima and K; I would like to show K
waiting by the steps for him. He comes in sees K invites her in, they
talk, things happen and our movie ends.
I would like the grocery store scene to be improvised, but we should
meet up and together we can make the prompts. We can also think of
more scenes if needed.
...
